Why does the Important Application Installer continue to appear after a reboot even though it completed successfully?

We have seen in a few cases where even though the Important Application Installer completes successfully, it will prompt to run again on the next reboot.This issue has been resolved in the latest product release. If you are experiencing this issue, please do the following to resolve the issue:

• Open a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T)
• Run the command: sudo rm -f /etc/xdg/autostart/welcome.desktop
• Enter the administrator password.
• The issue should now be resolved.

Why does the installer stop on step 2 when installing Chrome?

Effective March 3,20016 Google has eliminated the 32 bit Chrome download from their site. This causes the Xtra-PC Installerto stop at step 2 of the install. All of the features and other applications of Xtra-PC loaded in step one will run fine.

If the step 2 Chrome installer is still open, close it by clicking on the 'x' in the top right corner of the installer window.

There are two options for fixing this problem:

1. Do nothing. The Chromium browser is installed in Xtra-PC and can be used as the browser. However, video-rich sites may or may not run on Chromium.
2. Download Firefox by going to Start 'X' --> Local Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager. Once the package manager opens,select search and then type Firefox in the search box. Click the checkbox next to 'firefox' and select 'Mark for Installation'. Then,click 'Apply' in the top toolbar.

Why do i get a message in google chrome that says this computer will stop receiving google chrome updates?

Recently, Netflix changed their system requirements for watching videos online with web browsers that use Silverlight. As a result, you can no longerstream Netflix videos on Xtra-PC devices shipped prior to 11/11/2015 when using the Netflix desktop shortcut on the Xtra-PC desktop because Silverlight is used to play the videos.

To start watching Netflix videos again on your Xtra-PC , please install the Google Chrome web browser by following the steps below. Chrome includesall the necessary video and Flash extensions needed to view streaming audio and video (i.e. Netflix, Amazon videos, etc..).

Once Chrome is installed, do not use the Netflix desktop shortcut anymore (follow step 5 below to remove the desktop shortcut). To watch Netflix, simply open Chrome and go to www.netflix.com.

Why does my computer still boot to Windows and not to my Xtra-PC USB device?

This is most likely caused by your computer not being set to boot from a USB device. Accessing the BIOS settings on computers variesdepending on the make and model of the computer. However, in general, when you first turn on your computer, you should see an option to enter yourcomputer's setup. To change your computer to boot to your Xtra-PC USB device, follow these steps:

1. Shut down your computer, then restart it.
2. When you see the manufacturer's logo, hit the key displayed to enter the BIOS. It varies, but this is sometimes called 'Setup,'not BIOS. (If your existing operating system starts, you've missed the chance to get into the BIOS. If this happens, just startover and try again to hit the key in time--don't worry; this may take you a few tries.) This key varies by manufacturer. The most common keys are F2, F10, F12, and Delete. Here's an example of what your screen may look like:
3. Once you're in the BIOS menu, select the 'Boot' or 'Boot Order' submenu. All manufacturers use slightly different BIOS layouts,so look for a variation on the name Boot.
4. In the 'Boot' or 'Boot Order' menu, change the Boot Order so that the 'USB device' is the first Boot device. Each BIOS menuwill have a different way of displaying your drive.

While the majority of computers boot from a USB Flash drive simply by setting the boot order as describedhere, some computers, such as the HP Compaq DX2400, don't support booting from USB flash drives. This can be confusingbecause they may even have an option to select in the boot order to boot from a USB drive. But this is referring to an actual USB HDD and not a USB flash drive. So, theXtra-PC USB device is detected as a HDD and not as a USB flash drive. You should see your Xtra-PC USB device listed in your detected HDDs in the BIOS, and most likely itwill be a lower priority than your internal drive.

To work around this limitation, look in the BIOS setup for something like 'HDD Priority' or 'HDD Boot Order'. If it is recognizing your Xtra-PC USB device as a HDD, thensetting it to boot from USB first in the boot order will not work. Instead, change the boot order to boot from a HDD first, and then set your Xtra-PC USB device as thefirst HDD in the HDD priority list.

How do I share a locally attached printer to my Xtra-PC to other Windows computers on my network?

It is possible to share a printer locally attached to your Xtra-pc to other Windows computers on your network. In order to do this, please perform the following steps.

1. Install the supporting software needed:
   • Open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T)
   • Install additional software needed: sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get -y install cups gedit samba
   • If you have an HP Printer, we highly recommend installing the drivers from HP: sudo apt-get -y install hplip
2. Add your printer via Printer Manager: Start 'X' button --> Local Administration --> Printers --> Printer Manager
   • Once Printer Manager opens, click the '+ ADD' button.
   • If Printer Manager sees your printer, it will list it in the Devices list in the left hand column. If it does not list your printer,you may not have the correct printer driver installed.
   • Select your printer in the Devices list. The best available driver is automatically selected as shown in the 'Connections' section.
   • Click the 'Forward' button.
   • Select any Installable options for your printer if you have them (i.e. duplexer). Then, click 'Forward'.
   • The printer will have a default name and description, but you can change it if you like. Please note that you should remember theshort name you give the printer as that is the name you will need to specify from your other Windows clients when mapping to this printerover the network.
   • Click 'Apply' button.
   • You can print a test page at this poinmt if you like to ensure it prints correctly by clicking on the 'Print Test Page' button.

9. Add the printer on your Windows computers by doing the following:
   • Go to where you can add a printer in Windows. This varies slightly depending on your Windows OS version, but in general, you go to 'Devices and Printers', then 'Add printer'
   • The browsing for printers in Windows is fairly unreliable, so we suggest that instead of waiting for Windows to finish searching for your printers, to just simply click on'The printer that I want isn't listed'.
   • Select the 'Select a shared printer by name' and type in the network path to your printer where 'computername' is the Name or IP of your Xtra-PC and'printername' is the short name you gave your printer in step 2 above: computernameprintername
   • Windows may complain about a missing driver and offer you to choose one manually. Do this and select your printer.
   • You should now be able to print to the printer attached locally to your Xtra-PC from any Windows client on your network.

Why can't I connect to my wireless network?

There are various reasons why you may not be able to connect to your wireless network. It can range from the wireless network adapterbeing turned off at the hardware level to a different wireless network adapter driver being needed. The following steps will walk you through theproces of getting your wireless network to work with Xtra-PC.

1. Boot to the Xtra-PC USB
2. Once Xtra-PC is loaded and you are logged in, left click on the network connection icon (it looks like two computer monitors) in thebottom right corner (next to the clock). If it lists your wireless network, left click on it to connect. If it doesn't listyour wireless network, proceed to the next step.
3. Right click on this icon and see if 'Enable Wi-Fi' is checked. If not, click on it to enable Wi-Fi. Wait about 30 seconds and thencheck again to see if it lists your wireless network. If it lists your wireless network, left click on it to connect. If it doesn't listyour wireless network, proceed to the next step.
4. Check to see if the wireless LED on your computer itself shows if wireless is on or off (i.e. usually the LED is orange if off; green or blue if on)?
5. If it shows as turned off on the hardware, try turning it on at the hardware level. The switch for this varies with your computer vendor. If it lists your wireless network, left click on it to connect. If it doesn't list your wireless network, proceed to the next step.
6. Check if Wi-Fi is disabled at the software level by doing the following:
   • Open a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T)
   • Run the command: rfkill list all
   • Do any of your wireless network adapters say 'yes' to soft or hard blocked?
     • If any say 'yes', this means your wireless adapter is disabled. To enable your wireless adapter, run: sudo rfkill unblock wifi

       NOTE: A hard block generally can't be overridden by software (i.e with rfkill) and means your wireless adapter is disabled at the hardware level. So, if running sudo rfkill unblock wifi doesn't enable your wireless adapter, it's likely there is a hardware switch thatneeds to be turned on.

     • If all say 'no' and you still can't connect to your wireless network, proceed to the next step.
7. Lastly, it could be that a different wireless adapter driver is needed. Many wireless adapters are detected and load drivers automatically, but somewireless adapters may not work with the default drivers that are installed and need different drivers to be installed.
   • Determine which wireless adapter you have by doing the following:
     • Open a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T)
     • Run the command: lspci –nn –d 14e4:
       • NOTE: the ':' at the end of the lspci line above is required and not a typo
       • You will get something back that looks like:

         Network Controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802:11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01)

       • The command lspci –nn –d 14e4: is for Broadcom wireless cards specifically. If that command does not return anything(just returns to the command prompt without any printed output), then you have another wireless card like an Intel.In that case, you can get the chipset by running: lspci –nn.
   • Odds are, if your wireless is not working due to an incorrect driver, you have a Broadcom wireless adapter. The following steps show how to switchto another Broadcom wireless driver. If you have a wireless adapter that is not a Broadcom and/or can't connect to the internet via a wired network connection,please contact support with the outputs from the commands rfkill list all and lspci –nn
     • The easiest and quickest way to install and switch drivers is to temporarily hook your computer to a wired network connection (i.e. hook to your router or internal switch). Thisway you can connect to the internet to have the correct drivers downloaded, etc.
     • Once you are connected to the internet via your wired network connection, run the following steps to install a different driverfor your Broadcom wireless adapter:
       • Open a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T)
       • Remove the current Broadcom wireless driver by running: sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
       • Install the new driver by running: sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
       • Once complete, reboot by running: reboot
   • After rebooting, left click on the network connection icon in the bottom right corner (next to the clock). If it lists your wireless network,left click on it to connect.

When I plug my Xtra-PC into my Windows 7 computer, I get a message saying, 'You need to format the disk in Drive (X) before you can use it. you wantto format it now?' What do I do?

This happens because Windows 7 doesn't recognize the Xtra-PC drive. DO NOT HIT FORMAT OR YOU WILL DESTROY YOUR XTRA-PC! Hit 'Cancel' and then restart yourcomputer. Xtra-PC will boot. We recommend always shutting down your Windows PC, then inserting Xtra-PC, then starting the PC.

How can I reset my Administrator account password if I have forgotten it?

Any user account with administrator privileges can reset another user's password. So, the quickest and easiest method to reset the administratoruser account password is to use another user with administrator privileges. If you have another user account with administrator privileges, then log inas that user, and either use the User Account GUI tool or command line to reset the administrator account password. Access the User Account GUI tool bygoing to the Start 'X' button --> Local Administration --> User Accounts. Reset via the command line by opening a terminalwindow (Ctrl+Alt+T), then using the command: sudo passwd administrator

If another user with administrator privileges isn't available, then you can reset the administrator user account password by booting the Xtra-PC USB device into single user mode. To boot intosingle user mode and reset the administrator user account password, do the following:

1. Shut down your Xtra-PC
2. Turn the power back on your computer and hold the Shift key down while the computer boots. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a blue background GNU GRUB menu.
   • You should see 4 items in the menu including Xtra-PC GNU/Linux and Advanced options for Xtra-PC GNU/Linux
3. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, scroll down to the Advanced options for Xtra-PC GNU/Linux menu item, then hit the Enter key.
4. This will bring you to another menu (black background) with 2 options: Xtra-PC GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.13.0-24-generic and Xtra-PC GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.13.0-24-generic (recovery mode)
5. Select the second menu item Xtra-PC GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.13.0-24-generic (recovery mode)
6. This will load the kernel and initial ramdisk and bring you to the recovery menu. This can take a couple minutes to complete.
7. On this menu, scroll down and select 'root Drop to root shell prompt'
8. At the bottom of the screen, you will now be sitting at a root user prompt.
9. In recovery mode, the filesystem will mount as read-only when choosing this option. So, you need to remount it with rw (read-write) access. If you don't do this, you will not be able to changethe password of the administrator user. To remount the filesystem with rw access, run this command: mount –rw –o remount /
10. After remounting the filesystem with rw access, you can change the password of the administrator user account (or any other user for that matter) byrunning: passwd administrator
11. After changing the password, type reboot and then hit the enter key to restart your computer. Please note that afterhitting the enter key, you will see the recovery menu again. There is no need to do or select anything as in about 30 seconds or so, the computerwill restart automatically.

After this, the computer will boot into Xtra-PC with the new administrator password you just set.

What do I do if I get a message that Abobe Flash Player plug-in is not installed or that 'Adobe Flash Player is required to display some elements on this page'?

The Adobe Flash Player plug-in is installed during the initial Xtra-PC setup configuration after starting your Xtra-PC USB device for the first time. If you decided at the time not torun through the initial setup configuration wizard and canceled out of it, you should install it now by going toStart 'X' button --> Local Administration --> Useful Tools --> Third Party Software Install.

If you did run the initial Xtra-PC setup and still get messages about needing to install the Adobe Flash Player plug-in, you may need to remove and then re-install the Adobe Flash Player plug-in. To do this, ensure you have an internet connection and then follow either the GUI or command line method below:

Re-installing Adobe Flash Player plug-in GUI Method

1. Close all web browser windows
2. Launch the Synaptic Package Manager: Start 'X' button --> Local Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager
3. Enter the Administrator account password when prompted. You can also chose another user account that has administrator privileges if you prefer.
4. Click on Search in the top toolbar and in the search field, search for 'flashplugin-installer'
5. Click on the checkbox next to 'flashplugin-installer' and then select 'Mark for Complete Removal'.

   Note: There is an option for 'Mark for Reinstallation', but please don't use this option because this may not be sufficient to correct the issue.

6. Click Apply in the top toolbar, then click Apply on the confirmation window that pops up.
7. Once removal is complete, you should be back at the Synaptic Package Manager window and 'flashplugin-installer' should be unchecked.
8. Click the checkbox next to 'flashplugin-installer' and then select 'Mark for Installation'
9. Click Apply in the top toolbar, then click Apply on the confirmation window that pops up.
10. Once installation is complete, you should be back at the Synaptic Package Manager window and 'flashplugin-installer' should be checked.

Note: You must run these commands with a user with administrator privileges.

1. Open a terminal window: Ctrl+Alt+T
2. Remove the Adobe Flash Player plug-in: sudo apt-get -y purge flashplugin-installer

4. Removal will proceed after you enter your password. If you used a user without administrator privileges, you will get a failure message at this point indicating youdon't have the correct privileges to remove the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and the Adobe Flash Player Plugin will not be removed.
5. After removal completes, install Adobe Flash Player plug-in again: sudo apt-get -y install flashplugin-installer

1. Download Minecraft from Minecraft's website here
   • For Linux, they provide a Minecraft.jar to run Minecraft.
2. Browse to the location where you downloaded the Minecraft.jar file in File Manager
   • Open the file manager from start menu (start 'X' button --> File Manager)
   • Browse to where you downloaded the Minecraft.jar file
3. Add executable permission to the Minecraft.jar file
   • Right-click on the Minecraft.jar, then click on 'Properties'
   • Click on the 'Permissions' tab

If your DVD still doesn't work, follow these steps:

1. Click on 'Media,' then 'Open Disc.' You should be in the Disc menu.

To set up your Xtra-PC, please follow the steps below. At the bottom of this page, you can also watch videos of these install steps and install process.

1. Plug the Xtra-PC USB device into a USB port on your computer.

   NOTE: If you plug your Xtra-PC in while running Windows, you may be prompted by Windows to format the drive. DO NOT FORMAT THE DRIVE! Click 'Cancel' and proceed to step 2. For more information on this, please see Appendix D - Frequently Asked Questions.

2. Ensure that Secure Boot is disabled in your computer's BIOS/UEFI.

   NOTE: If you are unsure if Secure Boot is disabled, run the DoubleClickToUseXtraPC.exe tool that is on your Xtra-PC drive. See Appendix B – How to Disable Secure Boot for more details.

3. Restart (reboot) your computer or restart to Xtra-PC directly from Windows (See Appendix A - Restarting to Xtra-PC from Windows).

4. When the computer restarts and you see the initial start-up screen for your computer, start tapping the boot menu key for your computer.

   Examples of common computer boot menu keys:

   NOTE: If your computer loads as it always has and not to the Xtra-PC USB device, then you did not press the boot menu key in time or it was not available on boot. In this situation, follow the instructions in Appendix A that explains how to use the DoubleClickToUseXtraPC tool to help you boot to the Xtra-PC device.

5. When the boot menu appears, select the USB to boot to the Xtra-PC device.

   NOTE: If you select the Xtra-PC device and you get an error message about 'Access Denied' or 'Authentication Issue', this means that Secure Boot is still enabled in the BIOS/UEFI and needs to be disabled before booting to Xtra-PC. See Appendix B – How to Disable Secure Boot for further explanation and steps to take to disable Secure Boot.

6. When your computer boots to the Xtra-PC USB device, you will come to a Welcome screen asking you to pick your preferred language. Select your preferred language and then click 'Continue'.

7. Select your keyboard layout, then click 'Continue'.

8. If your computer has Wi-Fi capability, you will be asked if you want to connect to your wireless connection now.

   NOTE: If your computer does not have Wi-Fi capability, you will automatially go to step 9.
   NOTE: It is not mandatory that you join your wireless network. If you prefer, you can always join your wireless network later by selecting 'I don't want to connect to a wi-fi network right now'

   • Select your Wireless network from the list and then click 'Connect':

   • When prompted, enter your wireless password, then click 'Connect':

   • If there is a problem connecting to your wireless network (for example, an incorrect wireless passcode is entered), you will be prompted to try again. Otherwise, if it successfully joins your wireless network, you can click on 'Continue':

9. Select your timezone by clicking on your location on the map, then click 'Continue':

10. Enter your Name. The computer's name and username fields will automatically populate. You can choose to use the automatically created computer name and password, or you can click in the box and change them to whatever you would like. Then, enter your password into the password and confirm password fields. Finally, choose if you want to enter your password every time you log in or have it automatically log you in without having to enter your password. When done, click 'Continue':

    The install process will now run and finish. This will take a couple minutes. Once done, if you chose to always enter your password when logging in, you will get the Xtra-PC login screen. If you chose to 'Log in automatically', you can proceed to step 12.

11. Log in with your username and password that you specified in step 10.

12. After logging in, you will see a welcome screen. In the 'Application To install' section, select the additional applications you would like to install. Deselect any applications you do not want to install. Then, click the 'Next' button:

13. You will see the Additional Information and EULA License Terms window. Click the box to agree to the EULA terms and then click the 'Next' button:

14. You must be connected to your network for the installation to continue. You can either connect to your wireless network or your wired network.
